The Friends of the Boundary Waters Wilderness was formed in 1976, to help bring full wilderness protection to the Boundary Waters. Currently, a Friends of the Boundary Waters – Executive Director FINAL major focus of the organization is to prevent pollution from proposed sulfide mining projects from impacting area waters, cultural resources, human use and enjoyment of the region.
The Executive Director is the public face of the Friends and represents the organization with a multitude of stakeholders including staff, board members, policy makers, members, donors, and the media. The Executive Director provides overall leadership for and management of Friends of the Boundary Waters Wilderness. The ED is responsible for carrying out the Friends’ mission by ensuring the development, implementation and monitoring of goals, policy and strategic initiatives and by developing sufficient human and financial resources for organizational growth and stability.
The position is located at the organizations Minneapolis headquarters and is responsible for leading the team of 6 staff. The ideal candidate for the Friends is an astute, energetic leader with successful executive experience in a conservation-related organization and demonstrated ability to develop and implement effective advocacy strategies for wilderness protection.
Applicants must possess a five or more years of executive leadership experience in strategic planning, financial and personnel management. The position requires a person of integrity and stature in the environmental community, with a depth of experience and knowledge in conservation advocacy, policy development, grassroots efforts and stakeholder relations and partnerships. Candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree; a Master’s degree is preferred.
