PPL’s new three-year strategic plan consolidates their greatest strengths into “Housing with Services” and “Employment Readiness”.

Last year, more than 15,000 people moved into affordable homes, earned higher incomes, improved their academic skills, managed and grew their assets, and gained economic independence thanks to PPL programs and services. PPL began in 1972 as an affordable housing developer, and now owns or manages a portfolio of more than 1,300 units of affordable or supportive housing throughout the Twin Cities metro area. Response to community need has been at the root of PPL’s evolution to its current form, as a robust multi-service agency. In addition to affordable housing and services, PPL offers work readiness and job training programs that focus on helping individuals overcome barriers to employment and job retention. To help break the cycle of poverty, PPL connects children to resources and relationships that will help them succeed through high school graduation. PPL also operates two alternative schools, providing environments that support academics, personal achievement, and workforce readiness.

PPL serves a highly diverse population from four main service sites, two business locations, and over 60 buildings that provide affordable rental housing (many with on-site services and staff). The organization’s annual consolidated operating budget is approximately $43 million, and assets total just under $174 million. PPL employs about 180 full-time staff members.

The Role: Project for Pride in Living (PPL) seeks a Chief Financial Officer (CFO), who will provide strategic and operational leadership in the areas of Financial Management, Human Resources and Information Technology Services. Housing with services activities include a significant level of real estate development and residential rental property management. Prior experience in the financial accounting and financing structure issues related to affordable housing development is very important to provide the necessary leadership. Employment readiness depends on multiple revenue sources including contributed income and governmental funding. Knowledge of non-profit accounting, grant management and governmental audit requirements is also very helpful to providing leadership to these activities. As a senior leader reporting directly to the CEO, the CFO will also be part of PPL’s Executive Team, and have significant interaction with the organization’s Board of Directors and other stakeholders.

Client News! Generation Next announces new Executive Director

Generation Next and CohenTaylor are excited to announce that Michelle Walker, CEO of Saint Paul Public Schools, will be the new Executive Director. CohenTaylor search partners, Chris Cohen, Don Taylor and Katie Erickson, worked diligently with the Generation Next Executive Director search committee, Executive Committee and Leadership Council, and confirmed Ms. Walker’s appointment at a special meeting on August 31.

Walker is a national leader who has extensive cross-sector experience in education strategy and policy including positions in Washington, DC, New York and Saint Paul. She has held leadership positions in Saint Paul Public Schools for the last nine years.

“Michelle has a track record of success in effective cross-sector collaboration, and deep knowledge of education data and best practices,” said Eric Kaler, president of the University of Minnesota and co-chair of the Generation Next Leadership Council. “She is the right leader to accelerate the ambitious efforts of Generation Next: closing the unacceptable achievement and opportunity gaps in Minneapolis and Saint Paul.”

When Walker assumes her new role on October 18, she will bring hands-on experience with Generation Next to the job. For the past three years, Walker has been an active member of the Generation Next Leadership Council, paving the way for many collaborative projects between Saint Paul Public Schools and Generation Next.
